Builder costs $89 a month with no transaction fee, payouts land about 2 business days after each sale, and Teachable handles sales tax. Skip it if you give away free courses at scale, because free students above 100 cost $0.50 each per month.

How Teachable scores
| Criterion | Weight | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fees and take-home | 30% | 7.5 | Builder's $89 price with no transaction fee is the cheapest fee-free plan here, but Starter's 7.5% cut and the $0.50 free-student fee hold it back. |

How much does Teachable take?
Teachable takes 7.5% of every sale on Starter and nothing on Builder, Growth, or Custom. Card processing is extra on every plan: Teachable Payments charges 2.9% + $0.30 for a US card at a US school.
Plans cost $39, $89, or $189 a month on monthly billing, or $29, $69, or $139 a month billed annually. Teachable says annual billing saves 22%.
Teachable Payments has two bundles. Standard has no bundle fee but adds 0.7% to recurring charges and 0.5% to sales where tax is assessed. Global costs 2.8% on all transactions, waives both of those fees, and adds 35+ local payment methods and Adaptive Pricing. Chargebacks cost $15.
For most US sellers, Standard is the cheaper bundle. Global only pays off if a large share of your buyers live abroad. Compare the totals with other platforms on our fee table.
Starter or Builder: which plan should you pick?
Pick Builder once you sell more than about $667 a month. Above that, Starter's 7.5% fee costs more than the $50 difference between the two plans.
Starter also leaves out a custom domain, built-in email marketing, and the affiliate program, so most sellers outgrow it quickly. Builder adds all three plus real-time support.
Growth at $189 is for teams and larger schools. It adds 5 admin users, certificates, branding removal, bulk student imports, Zapier, webhooks, and API access. Keeping certificates off the $89 plan is an odd choice for a course platform, and Thinkific includes them on its entry plan.
Here is what you keep from one-time US card sales of $150 each on the Standard bundle, after the subscription and processing:
- $600 a month: Starter leaves about $497, Builder about $492.
- $1,000 a month: Starter leaves $855, Builder leaves $880.
- $3,000 a month: Starter leaves $2,643, Builder leaves $2,818.
- $10,000 a month: Builder leaves $9,601, Growth leaves $9,501.
What can you sell on Teachable?
Teachable sells online courses, coaching, digital downloads, and memberships. Each published course, coaching offer, or download counts as 1 product toward your plan limit, no matter how many lessons or files it holds.
Memberships, bundles, and unpublished drafts do not count toward the limit. That makes Builder's 10 products more useful than it sounds, since a membership can wrap several courses.
Every plan includes the iOS and Android student apps, AI creation tools, coupons, upsells, order bumps, bundles, and abandoned cart emails. You can add up to 10 upsell offers at checkout. Compared with Podia, which allows 50 products on its $49 plan, Teachable's limits are tight if you sell many small items.
What are Teachable's usage fees?
Teachable charges $0.50 a month for each student above 100 who holds any enrollment that did not come from a paid checkout. Students whose only enrollments were paid through Teachable are free, with no limit. A paying student who also joins a free course counts toward the 100.
The fee covers free products, 100% coupons, manual enrollments, imports, API enrollments, and buyers who paid on another platform. If your funnel starts with a free mini-course, 1,000 free signups would cost $450 a month.
Schools created on or after September 3, 2026 are on this policy now. Older schools move at their first renewal on or after April 30, 2027, and the count starts at zero on the day they switch. Teachable says more than 80% of customers pay no usage fees.
Video storage above 1,000 GB costs $15 a month per extra terabyte.
How do Teachable payouts work?
Teachable Payments pays out daily, about 2 business days after each sale, straight to your bank in your local currency. A Tuesday sale pays out Thursday.
There is no reserve on transactions. The older Teachable:pay system held a 10% reserve, so this is a real improvement for cash flow. Payouts pause if your earnings pass $500 without a tax form on file.
Teachable Payments runs in 41 countries, and it calculates, collects, and remits sales tax and VAT in 45+ markets. Elsewhere, or if you prefer, you can connect your own Stripe Standard account as a Custom Payment Gateway. You then handle your own tax, pay affiliates manually, and, if your school is in the US, pay Teachable a 2% integration fee on every transaction.
Teachable FAQ
Does Teachable have a free plan?
No. Teachable is a paid service with a free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. The cheapest plan is Starter at $39 a month, which takes 7.5% of each sale.
Is Teachable's 7.5% fee charged on top of card processing?
Yes. On Starter, Teachable takes 7.5% and Teachable Payments also charges processing, which is 2.9% + $0.30 for a US card at a US school. A $100 sale leaves you about $89.30 before any bundle fees.
Can I use my own Stripe account with Teachable?
Yes. The Custom Payment Gateway connects a Stripe Standard account on any plan in any country. US schools pay Teachable a 2% integration fee per transaction on top of Stripe's fees and the plan's transaction fee. Teachable also stops handling sales tax, and affiliate payouts become manual.
Can I export my students from Teachable?
Yes. School owners can export user data and transactions as CSV files, which Teachable emails to the owner. There is no single export for course content, so videos and files must be downloaded one at a time.
Is Teachable better than Thinkific?
For most solo sellers, yes, because Builder costs $89 against Thinkific's $109 Start plan and both charge no platform fee. Thinkific is better for certificates, assessments, and B2B sales. See Teachable vs Thinkific.
