Best Creator Platforms

Payhip review

Every feature on every plan, a 5% fee on the free plan, and VAT handled for you.

Verdict

Payhip is the best place for most creators to sell digital products. Every plan includes every feature, the free plan takes 5% per sale plus standard Stripe or PayPal processing, and Payhip collects EU and UK VAT, US sales tax, and most Canadian sales tax for you. Pick Gumroad instead if you need tax handled in every country.

What works

  • Free plan includes every feature, with a 5% fee.
  • Pro plan drops the platform fee to 0% at $99 a month.
  • Collects and remits digital EU and UK VAT and US sales tax at no extra charge.
  • Sells downloads, courses, coaching, memberships, physical goods, and license keys from one store.
  • Payments go straight to your own Stripe or PayPal account.

What doesn't

  • Card processing is always extra, so the free plan costs about 7.9% + $0.30 on a US card.
  • Tax handling covers the EU, UK, US, and Canada, minus Quebec QST. Other taxes are yours to set up.
  • You manage your own Stripe or PayPal account, including its disputes and payout schedule.
  • You must set a tax category on each product for US sales tax to work correctly.

How much does Payhip cost?

Payhip costs $0, $29, or $99 a month, with transaction fees of 5%, 2%, or 0% to match. Every plan includes every feature, so the only thing you buy with a paid plan is a lower fee. Stripe or PayPal processing comes on top at their standard rates.

On a $20 ebook bought with a US card through Stripe, the free plan costs $1 to Payhip and $0.88 to Stripe. You keep $18.12. The same sale on Gumroad leaves you $16.62.

There is no product or revenue cap on any plan. Payhip's pricing page lists unlimited products and unlimited revenue on Free, Plus, and Pro alike.

Upgrade when the math says so. Plus beats the free plan once you sell about $967 a month, because 3% of that covers the $29 fee. Pro beats Plus above $3,500 a month. The fee table runs this for every platform.

Does Payhip handle sales tax and VAT?

Payhip collects and remits tax in four regions: digital EU VAT, UK VAT, US sales tax, and Canadian GST, HST, and PST. EU and UK VAT handling is on by default. Since July 1, 2026, Payhip has acted as a marketplace facilitator for US sales tax, and its help center says it charges nothing for this. If you already file VAT yourself, you can switch the EU and UK handling off in your tax settings.

Canada has two gaps. Payhip has handled GST, HST, and PST since July 1, 2026, but Quebec QST stays with you if you are required to collect it. If you are already registered for GST, you complete form GST506 with Payhip to confirm the responsibility has moved to Payhip.

Outside those regions, the job is yours. Payhip's pricing page says you can set up other taxes in your settings. Its help pages do not call Payhip a merchant of record, which is how Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy describe themselves.

There is some setup. You set a tax category on each product, and Payhip's US article notes you may still need to file a zero-dollar return in any state where you have a physical presence.

What can you sell on Payhip?

Payhip sells almost anything a creator makes, from one store, on every plan. Its features page lists these product types:

  • Digital downloads in any file format, including ebooks, templates, software, video, and music
  • Online courses with quizzes, certificates, drip content, and progress tracking
  • Coaching sessions booked through Zoom and Calendly integrations
  • Memberships and subscriptions with tiers
  • Physical products with stock and shipping tracking
  • Software license keys, uploaded or generated automatically
  • Bundles within or across product types

What else does Payhip include?

Payhip includes coupons, cross-sell order bumps, an affiliate program you run yourself, a built-in marketplace, and a custom domain on every plan, including Free. You can export your customers and your course students or members. For email, Payhip has its own updates tool and connects to services like Mailchimp, MailerLite, and ConvertKit.

Payments land in your own account. Payhip connects to Stripe and PayPal, plus regional gateways like Mollie, Square, Mercado Pago, Paystack, and Razorpay. Its pricing page says sales are deposited to you immediately after a transaction completes, and your processor's own payout schedule takes it from there.

Who should skip Payhip?

Skip Payhip if you sell almost entirely from a social media bio and want booking, courses, and downloads laid out for phones. Stan is built for that, at $29 a month with no transaction fee.

Also skip it if a large share of your buyers live outside the EU, UK, US, and Canada and you do not want to handle their taxes. Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy act as merchant of record everywhere they sell, though both cost more per sale on a US card than Payhip's paid plans.

Payhip FAQ

Is Payhip really free?

Yes. The Free Forever plan has no monthly cost and includes every feature, unlimited products, and unlimited revenue. Payhip takes 5% of each sale, and Stripe or PayPal charge their standard processing fees on top.

Does Payhip charge PayPal and Stripe fees too?

Payhip does not charge them, but you still pay them. Stripe and PayPal take their standard rates on each transaction, separate from Payhip's 5%, 2%, or 0% fee. For a US card on Stripe that is 2.9% + $0.30.

Which Payhip plan should I choose?

Start on Free. Move to Plus at $29 a month once you sell about $967 a month, and to Pro at $99 a month once you pass $3,500 a month. Below those points, the lower fee does not cover the subscription.

Is Payhip a merchant of record?

Payhip collects and remits digital EU and UK VAT, US sales tax, and Canadian GST, HST, and PST for you, but its help pages do not describe it as merchant of record. Quebec QST and taxes outside those regions are your responsibility. Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy are full merchants of record.

How fast does Payhip pay out?

Payhip does not hold your money. Buyers pay into your own connected Stripe, PayPal, or regional gateway account, and Payhip's pricing page says sales are deposited immediately after the transaction completes. When the money reaches your bank then depends on that processor's payout schedule.

Is Payhip better than Gumroad?

For most sellers, yes. Payhip's free plan takes 5% plus processing against Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 plus processing, and Payhip includes more course and coaching tools. Gumroad vs Payhip covers where Gumroad still wins.
