A low-fee merchant of record for software and digital goods, now owned by Stripe.
Verdict
Lemon Squeezy still accepts new sellers, and its 5% + $0.50 fee is the cheapest merchant of record in this category, with processing and global sales tax included. It suits software and license-key sellers. The catch is its future: Lemon Squeezy's own 2026 update says the goal is moving users to Stripe Managed Payments. Join expecting to migrate later.

How Lemon Squeezy scores
| Criterion | Weight | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fees and take-home | 30% | 8.0 | 5% + $0.50 with processing and tax included is cheap for a merchant of record, though surcharges add up to 3.5% on some sales. |
| Features for the job | 25% | 7.0 | Strong for software with subscriptions and license keys, weaker for creators, and the public changelog has had no entries since August 2025. |
| Audience ownership | 20% | 6.0 | Custom domain and data exports are available, but the planned move to Stripe Managed Payments means you will likely have to migrate. |
| Ease of use | 15% | 7.0 | Setup needs a business questionnaire, identity checks, and 2 to 3 business days of review before you can sell. |
| Payouts | 10% | 6.5 | Twice a month after a 13-day hold with a $50 minimum, plus a 1% fee on bank payouts outside the US. |
What works
- 5% + $0.50 covers card processing, fraud protection, and global tax handling.
- Merchant of record, so VAT and sales tax are collected and filed for you.
- Built for software, with subscriptions and license keys.
- Email marketing free for up to 500 subscribers.
- Custom domain carries over to product and checkout links.
What doesn't
- Lemon Squeezy says its goal is moving users to Stripe Managed Payments.
- No public changelog entries since August 2025.
- Stores need KYC review before going live, and services are typically not approved.
- Surcharges for non-US buyers, PayPal, and subscriptions.
- Payouts only twice a month, after a 13-day hold.
Can new sellers still join Lemon Squeezy?
Yes. As of October 20, 2026, Lemon Squeezy's pricing page still offers signup and its registration form is live. No shutdown date has been announced on its site.
Joining is not instant. Every store starts in test mode, and you complete a business questionnaire and identity verification before you can take live payments. Lemon Squeezy's help docs say approvals typically take 2 to 3 business days, and every store gets KYC and KYB checks.
Lemon Squeezy approves most stores selling digital goods it can deliver, such as ebooks, PDFs, design assets, audio, video, software, and memberships. It typically does not approve services or goods fulfilled outside its platform, so coaches should look at Payhip or Stan.
What is happening with Stripe?
Stripe bought Lemon Squeezy in July 2024, and the team is now building Stripe Managed Payments, a merchant of record product inside Stripe. Lemon Squeezy's January 28, 2026 update says the goal is to give Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to migrate to it. The post gives no migration deadline and does not mention shutting down.
The product has slowed. Lemon Squeezy's public changelog has no entries after August 18, 2025. That does not stop you selling today, but it tells you where the investment is going.
If you do migrate, expect higher costs on US cards. Stripe's pricing page lists Managed Payments at 3.5% per transaction on top of standard Stripe fees, which is 6.4% + $0.30 for a domestic US card. For a seller starting today, that likely means setting up twice: once now, and again when the migration comes.
How much does Lemon Squeezy take?
Lemon Squeezy takes 5% + $0.50 per transaction, and that covers card processing, tax handling, and fraud protection. There is no monthly fee. On a $20 sale to a US buyer paying by card, you keep $18.50, against $16.62 on Gumroad. The same sale to a buyer outside the US costs $1.80, leaving $18.20.
Surcharges apply to some sales. Lemon Squeezy's fee page lists these:
- +1.5% for transactions outside the US
- +1.5% for PayPal transactions
- +0.5% for subscription payments
- +5% for payments recovered through abandoned cart emails
- +3% for affiliate referrals, paid by the merchant
Who is Lemon Squeezy best for?
Lemon Squeezy is best for selling software, plugins, and templates to buyers around the world. It acts as merchant of record, so it collects and files VAT and sales tax internationally. It also handles subscriptions and license keys, and since August 2025 its checkout displays in 34 languages.
The fee also covers tools other platforms charge extra for. Lemon Squeezy's pricing page lists abandoned cart recovery, failed payment recovery, fraud protection, reporting, and customer billing support as included.
Store owners get a custom domain that carries over to product and checkout links, plus email marketing free for up to 500 subscribers. The docs include guides to exporting orders and email subscribers.
It is a weaker fit for creators selling courses, coaching, or bundles of small downloads. Payhip covers those product types with similar fees on its free plan and has no question mark over its future. The fee table compares take-home pay across all four platforms.
How do Lemon Squeezy payouts work?
Lemon Squeezy pays out twice a month to a bank account or PayPal. Net sales are held for 13 days before they become available, and the minimum payout is $50, with smaller balances rolling to the next cycle.
Bank payouts are free to US accounts and cost 1% per payout outside the US. PayPal payouts cost $0.50 in the US and 3%, capped at $30, elsewhere.
Lemon Squeezy's pricing page says it pays out to more than 200 countries, which is wider than most creator platforms list.
