Memberful review
Membership billing that runs through your own Stripe account and your own website.
Verdict
Memberful is the best pick for creators who want to own their membership business. Members pay through your own Stripe account, you can use your own domain, and there is no member cap. It costs $49 a month plus 4.9% per transaction, so it only beats Patreon on fees above about $960 a month.
7.6out of 10
Best for. Creators earning $1,000 a month or more who want members billed through their own Stripe account and their own website.
Skip it if. Creators just starting out, and anyone in Brazil, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Thailand, or Stripe's extended network, where Memberful cannot operate.

Memberful pricing
| Plan | Price | Fee | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $49/month | 4.9% per transaction plus Stripe fees | Checkout, trials, gifts, group plans, newsletters, podcasts, website builder, custom domains, integrations |

How Memberful scores
| Criterion | Weight | Score | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fees and take-home | 30% | 6.0 | 4.9% is low, but the $49 monthly fee makes it the most expensive option below about $960 a month. |
| Features for the job | 25% | 8.5 | Every billing model you could want plus newsletters, podcasts, courses, and integrations, but no fan app. |
| Audience ownership | 20% | 9.0 | Cards sit in your own Stripe account, custom domains are included, and members, orders, and subscriptions export as CSV. |
| Ease of use | 15% | 7.0 | Test mode helps, but connecting Stripe, a website, and integrations takes more work than a hosted page. |
| Payouts | 10% | 8.0 | Stripe deposits straight to your bank, but Memberful cannot serve five named countries or Stripe's extended network, and supports no PayPal. |
What works
- Member cards are stored in your own Stripe account.
- Custom domains, themes, and paywalls are included.
- Monthly, annual, and weekly billing, trials, gifts, and group plans.
- No member cap and month-to-month billing.
What doesn't
- $49 a month before you earn anything from live payments.
- Stripe only, with no PayPal.
- Not available in Brazil, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Thailand, or countries in Stripe's extended network.
- No fan app or discovery, so you bring your own audience.
How much does Memberful cost?
Memberful costs $49 a month plus 4.9% of each successful charge. Stripe adds its own processing fee, typically 2.9% + $0.30 per US card payment. There is one public plan, plus an Enterprise tier with custom volume pricing.
The $49 hurts at small scale. At $500 a month in memberships, Memberful's fees come to $73.50 before Stripe, which is 14.7% of revenue. Patreon would take $50 and Ko-fi $25.
At $2,000 a month, Memberful takes $147, or 7.4%, against Patreon's $200. At $5,000 a month it takes $294, or 5.9%, against Patreon's $500. Stripe's processing is the same on all three platforms if members pay by US card, so it does not change the ranking.
The math flips as you grow. Above about $960 a month, Memberful costs less than Patreon's 10% plan. Ko-fi's 5% stays cheaper until about $49,000 a month, so the case for Memberful is control, not price. Our fee table shows the crossover.
Why pick Memberful if it costs more?
Because the members are yours. Memberful manages the subscriptions but stores cards in your Stripe account, and Stripe deposits payments directly to your bank.
That makes leaving possible. You can export members, orders, and subscriptions as CSV files. Memberful's own docs show why this matters: it can move Substack members with their payment details because both use Stripe, while members coming from Patreon have to add a card again.
Custom domains, custom themes, and dynamic paywalls are included, so members stay on your site instead of a platform's.
The trade-off is that you do the marketing. Memberful gives you checkout, member accounts, and paywalls, but nothing that sends new fans your way. It suits a creator whose podcast, newsletter, or site already draws an audience.
What can you sell with Memberful?
Memberful sells subscriptions of almost any shape. The plan includes monthly, annual, and weekly billing, one-time payments, free and paid trials, gift purchases, group plans, and pay-what-you-want pricing.
It supports podcasts, newsletters, communities, courses, and downloads, with a website, landing page, and newsletter builder. It connects to WordPress, Mailchimp, Discord, and Kit. Tax collection, coupons, a referral program, and cancellation surveys are built in.
Memberful's pricing page lists no fan app or discovery feed. It is a billing and access layer for an audience you already have. Memberful is a Patreon company, but if you want a fan app, you need Patreon itself.
Who should skip Memberful?
Skip it if you are in Brazil, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Thailand, or a country in Stripe's extended network. Stripe does not support collecting Memberful's fee in those places, so Memberful cannot support businesses there.
Skip it if you need PayPal. Memberful supports no payment processor other than Stripe.
Skip it if you earn less than about $1,000 a month and have no website. The $49 fee is steep at that size, and setup takes more work than Ko-fi or Patreon.
Everyone else with a steady audience should price it out. Past about $960 a month in membership revenue you pay less than on Patreon's standard plan, and your members' cards sit in your own Stripe account.
How does Memberful pay you?
Stripe pays you, not Memberful. Payments land in your Stripe balance and Stripe deposits them to your bank on its normal schedule for your country.
Members can pay with any major credit or debit card, plus Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Link where eligible. Disputes and chargebacks go through Stripe.
Because the Stripe account is yours, Stripe also gives you the documents and exports for bookkeeping and tax reporting. You see every charge and refund in your own dashboard instead of a platform's summary.
Global tax collection is included in every plan, so Memberful can collect applicable taxes from members at checkout. You still need to know where you owe tax, but you do not have to bolt on a separate tool to collect it.
Memberful FAQ
Is Memberful free to try?
Yes. You can build and test in test mode for as long as you like. Memberful starts charging when you connect Stripe and turn on live payments.
Does Memberful take a cut of payments?
Yes, 4.9% of each successful charge, on top of the $49 monthly fee. Stripe charges its own processing fee as well. On a $10 US card payment, that is $0.49 to Memberful and $0.59 to Stripe.
Which countries cannot use Memberful?
Brazil, India, Malaysia, Mexico, Thailand, and countries in Stripe's extended network. Stripe does not support collecting Memberful's application fee there. Memberful suggests Stripe Atlas, which sets up a US company, for creators in countries Stripe does not cover yet.
Can I move my members from Patreon to Memberful?
You can import their details by CSV, but not their cards. Memberful's docs say members coming from Patreon need to add a payment method, and Memberful can send them an automated email asking for one.
Does Memberful work with WordPress?
Yes. WordPress is one of Memberful's managed integrations, so you can gate posts on your own site. Discord, Mailchimp, and Kit are also supported.
Can I cancel Memberful any time?
Yes. The paid plan is billed month to month with no long-term contract.
