Gumroad vs Stan

Pick Gumroad if you are starting out or sell to buyers in many countries, because it has no monthly fee and handles sales tax as merchant of record. Pick Stan once you sell more than about $242 a month in $25 products from a social bio and are ready to handle tax yourself.

On $10,000 a month: Gumroad $8,390, Stan $9,561. How we calculate this.

Pick Gumroad if

  • you are testing your first product and do not want a monthly bill.
  • you sell to buyers in many countries and want sales tax and VAT handled.
  • you want your own domain on your store.

Pick Stan if

  • most of your buyers come from an Instagram or TikTok bio.
  • you sell coaching calls and courses next to downloads.
  • you sell more than about $242 a month in $25 products, the point where its flat fee beats Gumroad's percentage.

Which is cheaper, Gumroad or Stan?

Stan is cheaper once you sell a few hundred dollars a month, and Gumroad is cheaper below that. Both charge the same 2.9% + $0.30 on a US card, so the difference is Gumroad's 10% + $0.50 per sale against Stan's $29 a month.

On $25 products, Gumroad's own fee is $3 a sale, so Stan wins from about $242 a month. At $1,000 a month you keep $930 on Stan and $839 on Gumroad. At $100 a month you keep $83.90 on Gumroad and $66.90 on Stan. The fee table runs every revenue level.

Which handles sales tax?

Gumroad does. It is merchant of record for all sales, so it collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide.

Stan does not. It can calculate tax at checkout through Stripe, but only in the region where you are registered, and registering and filing stay with you. If you sell to many countries, Gumroad's higher fee buys real work.

Which gives you more control?

Gumroad gives you a custom domain, and Stan does not. Stan's help center says you cannot create or embed a custom domain, so your store lives at a stan.store address.

Stan is better at bringing a list in. It imports up to 5,000 contacts from a CSV, while Gumroad does not support importing customers or subscribers at all. Both let you export your customers as CSV. Read the Gumroad review and Stan review for the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Is Stan Store better than Gumroad?

For social media creators selling more than a few hundred dollars a month, Stan is cheaper and its store is designed for visitors from a bio link. For beginners and international sellers, Gumroad is better because it has no monthly fee and handles sales tax.

Does Stan charge transaction fees like Gumroad?

No. Stan charges 0% transaction fees and makes its money from the $29 or $99 monthly plan. Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 per direct sale and 30% on Discover sales. Both pass on card processing.

Can I use both Gumroad and Stan?

Yes. Stan has external link products, so you can point a Stan store item at a Gumroad product page. You would pay Stan's monthly fee and Gumroad's per-sale fee on those sales.
